Concept of Tibetan Medicine
shabrim

The concept of Tibetan medicine is firmly based on the theory of Jungwa Nga the Five Elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air and the Space. The theory of  Jungwa Nga states that all living and non-living things in the world are composed of these five elements. Human being without exception is also a composite of these five elements. Tibetan Medicine clearly maintains that there is a strong relation between the characteristic features and function of the outer elements and the corresponding elements in the human body. This clearly exhibits the fact that any disturbances to the nature and characteristic of the outer environment will naturally have an equal harmful consequence in the physiological functions of the human health. Health as a whole is completely dependent on the status of the three principal energies of Lhung, Tripa and Badkan. These energies have been directly derived from the essences of the five physical elements. Lhung is related to element Air, Tripa to the Fire and Badkan with Earth and Water. Lhung is the main force responsible for the all the subtle and gross functions of the central nervous systems, circulation of blood, beating of the heart, inflation of the lungs, movement of the extremities, transportation of essential nutrients to the organs and cleansing of waste products. All the function that involves movement is Lhung. Tripa is responsible for the proper digestion of food and drink, maintaining the temperature of the organs and body, maintaining fair complexion and to induce courage and intelligence. All the function related with heat energy is Tripa. Badkan is responsible for the stability, firmness and flexibility of the body and its extremities. It enhances patience and induces sleep. All the function related with fluidity is Badkan.Balance of these elemental energies within the body means perfect health, whereas imbalances cause disorders.
